News Around The Club

April and May are shaping up to be busy times as we have Pistol and Cowboy shoots, the two Fishing Derbies with clean-up preparation plus regular Skeet and Trap activities.

Cowboy Action Shooting

Our hearty band of Cowboy Action Shooters, the Gunnysackers, have returned from the World Championships in Arizona plus a few other shoots along the trail. All are in good spirits, although a little saddle-sore. Ron Rice has provided a write-up of their exploits which can be found below.

The next Cowboy Action Shoot is scheduled for Sunday, April 10 from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm.

Pistol

The March "Miss and You're Out" pistol match attracted 10 shooters, most of whom shot the course of fire three times. The course of fire consisted of shooting one shot at 8-inch diameter steel plates at 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 25 yards. Miss a plate and you were out of that round.

On the first round, Drew Thompson and Richard Martin both shot clean and dueled it out in a shoot off on a 12-inch steel plate at 50 yards. It took three go-rounds before Drew rang the plate but Richard didn't.

The first round proved to be a warm-up for the second as four shooters shot clean — Andrew Thompson, Drew Thompson, Maura Devine and Richard Martin. Maura and Richard quickly dispatched the Thompsons and dueled it out for a few more cycles before Richard prevailed.

For the third round the shooters decided to shoot only at the 50-yard steel plate. It took a couple of cycles, but Maura finally prevailed over Richard. Maura mentioned that her next firearm purchase will be a .22RF so she can beat Richard more easily.

April's pistol match will be an Easter-themed Fun Shoot. Final details are still being worked out at press time but the course of fire will probably be:

Peeps

Peeps — you either love 'em or hate 'em. Our special SRGC Peeps are definitely for the latter as they are not soft and squishy, rather they are as hard as steel, produce a nice "Ping!" and satisfyingly fall over when hit with a bullet.

You have five rounds of .22LR shot from a rifle (provided) to blow these peeps to hell. Five points for each peep dispatched.

Easter Bunny

Pierce each of Mr. Bunny's ears once for 5 points each piercing. 5-shots allowed, 1 additional point for each round not fired — both ears must be pierced once to score points for unfired rounds. Hit an ear more than once and loose two points for each additional hit. Hits on other than the ears kill Mr. Bunny and scores zero points even if an ear has been pierced.

Eggs

Hit each of the eggs once — 5 rounds allowed. 5 points per egg hit, lose 2 points for each additional hit on an egg. Or place all 5 rounds in egg #2 and score 35 points — miss once and score zero!

Skeet & Trap

Trap hours have been adjusted to Tuesday – 4pm to 6pm and Saturday – 10am to 1pm. Note that the ending times are subject to attendance.

Please help the members who volunteer to run Skeet and Trap by not waiting until late in a scheduled session to show-up and shoot. 

Plymouth County League Banquet

The annual Plymouth County League Banquet will be held at Camp Kiwanee in Hanson on Saturday, April 23. The club has purchased a table of which four seats are still available. If you would like to attend, contact Ernie Foster at 617-620-0999 or ernie@websterprinting.com — first come, first served.

Fishing Derbies

Our annual fishing derbies are scheduled for early May. We voted to increase the budget for fish to $700 at the March meeting.

The Kids Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, May 7th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The Vocational Life Skills Derby will be held on Tuesday, May 10th from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. We will need volunteers on both days to help untangle snarls, bait hooks, etc.

Cleanup Day/Wood Splitting & Stacking

On Saturday, April 30th we will clean-up the grounds and clubhouse in preparation for the fishing derbies. We have also received more wood that needs to be split and stacked. Needless to say, help will be needed especially if you have a chain-saw or wood splitter.

The cowboy action shooters of Scituate “The Gunnysackers” ventured west to compete in various matches.

The first was at Cowtown located in Peoria AZ. It was a two day ten stage match and the results in the categories are as follows:

Phil Lennon 5th in the Elder Statesmen
Sue Lennon 6th in the Lady Duelist
Jean Alexander 3rd in Lady Frontier Cartridge
Ron Rice 2nd in Frontier Cartridge

The next Shoot was the Word Championship held in Phoenix known as “End of Trail"; a three day main match with 12 stages. The Gunnysackers finished as follows:

Then on our way home Jean and I went to the Florida State Championship consisting of two days with 10 stages. The results are as follows:

The trip was 7430 miles long and my gas costs was $1666.00. Word has it that Phil drove around 7600 miles pulling a 5th wheel and his gas costs were around $3400.00

NRA Achieves Historical Milestone as 25 States Recognize Constitutional Carry

A more than 30-year effort by the National Rifle Association (NRA) reached a milestone today as the Georgia legislature became the 25th state in the nation to pass constitutional carry. A movement long championed by the NRA, constitutional carry eliminates the need for government permission before a law-abiding individual can exercise their right to bear arms.

"The NRA paved the way for constitutional carry by first leading the charge for right-to-carry nearly 40 years ago. Today, every state, and the District of Columbia, provides for the carrying of a firearm for self-defense outside the home in some form, and half the nation recognizes the Second Amendment protects law-abiding citizens' right to self-defense as an inherent and inalienable right. NRA members have led this extraordinary brick-by-brick effort in building and expanding America's self-defense laws and we are not done!,” said Wayne LaPierre, CEO and executive vice president of the NRA.

The modern carry movement in America began in earnest in 1987 when NRA helped pass a law legalizing concealed carry outside the home for all law-abiding gun owners in Florida. This law established a “shall issue” permitting regime in Florida, meaning the state was required to issue a carry permit to anyone who applied and could legally possess a firearm. Over the next 15 years, NRA successfully worked to establish right-to-carry laws in 42 states. To this day, eight states have failed to pass such legislation. However, the NRA brought this issue to the Supreme Court last fall and if the court rules in favor of the Second Amendment, the door will be opened to eliminate restrictive carry regimes in those states in the near future.
