The Newsletter of the Scituate Rod & Gun Club
June 2025 — V32N06
Well, Scituate certainly hit the jackpot for rain in the May 22nd storm; 5 to 7+ inches of rain depending on location. The gangway to the float in our pond was horizontal! Needless to say the path to the Skeet/Trap field was under several inches of water.
In better news, the Executive Board voted to hold dues for the upcoming 2026 fiscal year at current levels. Keys for FY2026 will be free for the first one with replacements costing $10. Note that September's General Meeting will be held on Monday, September 8th. Nominations for elected office will also be closed at this meeting.
Fishing Derbies
We held our two annual fishing derbies in May. The Kids Fishing Derby was held on the 17th followed by the Vocational Life Skills Derby on the 20th. Both events were well attended with a good haul of fish being caught. The pond area was filled with the shrieks of excited anglers every time a fish was hooked.
Photos of both events can be viewed and downloaded from these links: KFD & VLS. Thanks go out to Rebecca Glancy for the VLS photos.
There's still a few trout left in the pond, if you want to try your luck at catching them before the ospreys, cormorants and Mother Nature take them.
Skeet and Trap
Trap continue to shoot on Saturday mornings only at this time. Skeet shoots on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings.
Cowboy Action Shooting
The Cowboy contingent of the club have ridden off into the sunset again; this time going to Tennessee and Maine. The annual Tri-State shoot for MA, CT & RI cowboy shooters, normally held at the Harvard club, was held in Maine this year as the onerous provisions of MA Ch135 make it too complicated and risky for non-MA shooters to compete in this state.
The next Cowboy Action Shoot will be held on Sunday, June 29 from 9:30 am until 1:00 pm.
Dicky Martin Appreciation Day & 22 Shoot
It can be reported on good authority that Dicky Martin was honored by, and thoroughly enjoyed his appreciation day when the pistol shed was dedicated in his name. Following the dedication ceremony, where Union Jack flags flapped in a fitful breeze, a .22 rimfire Lucky Target shoot was held. The first three finishers of the Lucky Target shoot were: Mike Kinahan 247, Sue Lennon 191 and Phil Lennon 185.
After the shoot, a lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers was served. Dicky, though dined on one of the most delicious steaks he has ever tasted — thanks Kenny! A few photos can be viewed here.
Pistol
The Combat Pistol Shoot on Saturday, May 10th attracted six shooters. Unfortunately, there was confusion with the scoring rendering the results unusable. The shooters did have a good time though.
The next pistol event will be a Lucky Bullseye Shoot which is a combined Bullseye and Lucky Target match on Saturday, June 28th starting at 2:00 pm; both sets of targets will be at 30 ft, or thereabouts. The Bullseye portion of the match can be shot with any range legal handgun; the Lucky Target portion must be shot with a .22 rimfire handgun. Ten rounds will be shot at the Bullseye targets and five rounds at the Lucky Targets The combined scores of the Bullseye and Lucky Targets will determine the winners and the "also shots".

Plymouth County League of Sportsmen held their May meeting at our club. The attendees dined on a spaghetti dinner from Victoria's. The Guest Speaker was Toby Leary of Cape Gun Works.
by CRPA published on June 5, 2025.
The Supreme Court today unanimously dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Mexican government against several American gun manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson, Beretta, Colt, Glock, and Ruger.
The lawsuit could generously be called a “reach”, with the Mexican government alleging that the firearm manufacturers were somehow fomenting violence south of the border.
While it is vexing that the Court devoted the time and resources to such a frivolous case while other 2A cases could help clarify Bruen, the case yielded some very good news. On behalf of the unanimous Court, Justice Elena Kagan wrote:
“Mexico here focuses on the manufacturers’ production of “military style” assault weapons, among which it includes AR–15 rifles, AK–47 rifles, and .50 caliber sniper rifles. But those products are both widely legal and bought by many ordinary consumers.”
That’s right. A unanimous Supreme Court, in an opinion authored an Obama appointee, just went clearly on the record to state that AR-15’s, AK-47’s and .50 caliber rifles are “widely legal”, which represents HUGE NEWS!
Yes we still need the Court to take a new 2A case to make sure that the Bruen standard is clear to every court in the land. CRPA’s Duncan v. Bonta is lined up to do just that. But in the meantime, we can celebrate the victory in today’s decision!
