News Around the Club

The big news is the big number on the check from KC's Game Feed! The photo above shows only a few of the club members and Friends of Kenny that made the Game Feed not only possible, but a huge success. A tremendous word of thanks goes out to them all for the time, sweat and effort they put in. Of special note are:

• Firstly, our club members who responded to the mailing asking for sponsors. 98 of you responded with $5,680 in donations. The winner of a year's membership drawing from those who donated was Rob Zoebisch — congratulations Rob!

• J.D. our chef who was invaluable in the planning of the food service for the event and spit-roasted two pigs staying overnight before the event to cook them plus other food the next day.

• Dauphinee Fisheries — Dave & Cherie, Jonathon, and Bobby — at the Fish Shack who cooked and served a continuous stream of customers all afternoon — their Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese was to die for. Jonathon had shucked all 300 oysters by 12:30pm!

• Maureen Crowell who honcho-ed the Food Tent making sure that everything ran smoothly.

• Two Beer Bob and Wild Bill manning their usual spot on the grills.

• The Beal Family with Bob at the front gate collecting the entry fee, Janine and Sam on the Treasurers table doling out raffle tickets for fistfuls of money and making sure everything was accounted for correctly and Sarah along with her friend Mia at the BB gun games who kept youngsters amused all afternoon popping balloons.

• Ernie Foster — our MC for the afternoon did yeoman's work, he must have had a sore throat the next morning or did a drop or two of Tennessee Honey work it's magic?

• Ron Hidalgo of The Sportsmen's Den in Quincy who gave us a very good deal on the 12 guns that were gun raffle prizes. Ron was a pleasure to work with and in recognition has been awarded a complementary membership in the club. Next time you are looking for a firearm, ammo, etc. stop by his store on Southern Artery.

• The members of the Game Feed Committee get a big shout-out as do the background folk who seem to turn-up at just the right time and help with every Game Feed.

•  It goes without saying that the biggest shout-out goes to Kenny Crowell for pulling this event together — after 42 tries, he got it right in spades!

The day was just right for the event, not too cold and not too hot. By 12:30pm we could not squeeze another vehicle onto our property so the police detail at the end of the driveway had to turn away vehicles, some of whom parked at the MBTA parking lot or Aubuchon Hardware and walked to the club! All told we had approximately 300 people at the event. There's a boat-load of photos available to view here which can also be downloaded.

Proceeds from the Game Feed will be used for improvements to our club, the first of which has already started with the closing-in of the old shooting shed which will become a storage area and workshop. One gable end and the side facing the parking lot are complete. The side facing the skeet field will feature barn doors for light and ventilation — when skeet/trap are not in action — with the other gable end being the main access with the stairs and approach being reworked/graded. The roof will also be re-shingled.

Another improvement project that is on the books is better access to the upper level of skeet high house where the throwing machine is located along with improvements to the storage shed for the clay birds.

A new storage shed is planned for behind the 50-yard range as the current storage is overflowing with steel targets and extremely awkward to access. Clearing operations are already underway to make the space for the new shed.

Finally, the word on the wind is "Lobtober Fest", stay tuned.

Pistol

The MAYO (Miss And You're Out) Pistol Match held on  held on January 7th drew a record number of shooters who shot the course of fire three times. Those who hit all six of the 8-inch plates arrayed at 3, 5, 7, 10, 15 and 25 yards then went into a shoot-off on a 12-inch steel plate at 50 yards. 

The first relay saw six competitors shoot clean, including a couple of junior guests who acquitted themselves handily. Winning the shoot-off was Drew Thompson.

By the second relay everyone had got the kinks worked out resulting in 10 shooters shooting clean. With so many shooting clean, this shoot-off took some time with multiple rotations, but eventually Alex Clark prevailed

Our Club President, Mike Kinahan put in an appearance toting his 44 Magnum revolver in the third relay. Despite the concussion, Mike was not the winner of the relay, which was won by Adam Proulx.

The next Pistol Match had not been announced at press time.

Cowboy Action Shooting

The Gunnysackers are riding the range to far flung places this month, so the next Cowboy Match will be in March .

Skeet and Trap

Both disciplines continue to shoot on their published schedules. A word of thanks goes to those members who helped unload and stack a recent clays delivery.
